Verna Maxine Whitney Weltha, child of Maxine Wanda Bailey Stewart Whitney and Charles Vernon Whitney, was born May 31, 1950 in Norton County, KS and passed away in Haysville, KS on September 8, 2017 at the age of 67.

 

For the first eighteen years of her life, Verna lived on the same farm where her father was born and raised, 5 ½ miles northwest of Almena, KS and attended Almena Grade School.  She was an honor student of Norton High School and was a member of the 4-H Club.  Music and the arts were her talents.  She had a truly blessed and joyous childhood in gratitude to her parents who exhibited God's love, provision, and guidance through Jesus Christ.

 

Verna was granted a music scholarship to Wichita State University, Wichita, KS, where she specialized in saxophone, piano, voice, and music education.  While at WSU, she toured Kansas as a member of the WSU Saxophone Quartet.  She was a member and soloist with the WSU Singers Choir and WSU Madrigals Singing Ensemble which were asked to participate in the Vienna Symposium of Music in Vienna, Austria in 1970.  At this time they toured France, Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg, and Germany.  Verna graduated with honors, Magna Cum Laude, with a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1973, and accrued 40 Graduate hours. 

 

She taught elementary vocal music in the Wichita Public schools USD 259, retiring after 25 years of service at the age of 62.  Verna always viewed her involvement with her students as a vocation of love and freedom culminating into programs which showcased their God given talents and spirit.  Summer work included piano background music for the Wichita Country Club.  She also gave private voice and piano lessons. 

 

Verna worked at Boeing Aircraft Company as a Clerk-Typist, Engineering Specifications Administrative Assistant, Procedures Analyst, and Operations Training Analyst over a period of thirteen years.  During this time she trained in American and International Ballroom Dance, Gave public dance exhibitions and received top awards at the International Dance Festival and Contests held in Miami, FL.  Decorating her home, landscaping, public arts performances, ballroom dance, and close friendships were all important in her life. 

 

Verna attended the Congregational Church in Almena, KS and was baptized and a member of the Norton Christian Church in Norton, KS.  She was also a member of the Riverside Christian Church in Wichita, KS where she was active in music, singing and leading youth choirs.  She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star (O.E.S.), Bethlehem Chapter #89 of Almena, KS. 

 

Survivors include relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her Father, Charles Vernon Whitney and her mother, Maxine Wanda Whitney.  Verna will be interred on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at 10:00 am at the Clearwater Cemetery, Lot ½ 2 (Section 6, Position 2), Clearwater, KS next to her mother.
