Alan Wayne Bloom, known affectionately as "Big Al" to many, passed away peacefully at his home in Douglass, Kansas on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at the age of 68. Born on August 2, 1956, in El Dorado, Kansas, Alan was the beloved middle son of James Everett Bloom and Eleanor "Sis" Jane Bloom. A lifelong resident of Douglass, he cherished his hometown and its community.
Alan graduated from Douglass High School in 1974, where he excelled as a football player and was a star wrestler. On April 6, 1974, he married Polly Ann (Jones) Bloom, the love of his life. Together they shared 50 wonderful years of marriage and raised three children: Charity, Travis, and Vanessa.
Alan worked for Boeing Aircraft Company for many years, earning recognition for his contributions to the flight line and modification teams. One of his proudest professional achievements was working on the modification of Air Force One. His dedication and expertise earned him several commendations during his career.
A devoted father and community member, Alan spent countless hours coaching t-ball, softball, and basketball for local youth. He was a mentor and father figure to many children in the Douglass area, always ready with a supportive word or a classic "dad joke" to brighten someone's day. Alan also enjoyed fishing, woodworking, goat ranching and landscaping with Polly, and cheering on his favorite teams - the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, and K-State Wildcats. Alan was a lifelong, KC Chiefs fan, supporting them even when they lost. He will certainly have the best seat in the house for their games now! Alan also loved to play cards and greatly enjoyed getting together with his buddies for poker nights.
Alan is survived by his loving wife, Polly Bloom; children, Charity Bloom Goben (Rick), Travis Bloom (Jessie Tate), and Vanessa Bloom; siblings, Milton Craig Bloom (Loren Morton), and Marcia Bloom Woods (Mike); sister in law, Sherri Braungardt; granddaughters, Alexis Goben Lockhart (Zachariah) and Mikaela Jade Goben; nieces and nephews, Jerod Seal, Crystal Olds, Kacey Putman, and Klint Woods. He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Sis Bloom.
A celebration of Alan's life will be held at the Douglass United Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, February 7, 2025. There will be a gathering following the service at the Douglass Senior Center. The family requests those attending wear casual attire and any KC Chiefs gear you have. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Douglass Senior Center, 124 W 4th St. Douglass, KS 67039 or Douglass Library, 319 S Forrest St, Douglass, KS 67039. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
