Douglas Allen "Rugman" Apel, 69, Augusta, passed away Thursday, May 9, 2024 in Wichita. Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday May 14, 2024 at Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta. Memorial service 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at the First Baptist Church, Augusta. Doug was born in Great Bend, Kansas on October 8, 1954, to the late Yvonne Ruth (Renfro) and Harry Charles Apel. He worked at Boeing and Spirit for 44 years retiring from Transportation.  After retirement, Doug enjoyed fishing, going to his family's sporting events, and going to the casino. On December 14, 1973, he married Patty (Burns) Apel at the First Southern Baptist Church, Augusta and she survives him. He is also survived by: sons, Douglas Apel, II (Jennifer Jester) of Leon and Dustin Apel (Ashley) of Augusta; brothers, Mike Apel (Tonie) of Augusta and Mark Apel of Wichita; sisters, Denise Pence of Augusta and Melinda Leonard (Darrell) of Louisville, KY; grandchildren, Gage, Brendon, Ashlyn, Jali, Jada, Daltin, Brock and Denver; step grandchildren, Mason, Micah and Maverick; and a great grandchild, Kamryn. He was preceded in death by brother, Duane Apel. Memorial donations may be made to the Augusta Recreation Commission.
