George Robert Martin, Jr.

George Robert Martin, Jr. passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, May 16, 2024 at the age of 91 years, 9 months. His wife, Eldena, precedes him in death.
George was born at home on Osage Street in Augusta, Kansas  August 23, 1932. His parents, George and Agnes (Cartwright) Martin, Sr. raised George to have a strong moral code as well as work ethic. He went on to graduate from Augusta High School in 1950, and attended one semester of college at Wichita State University before enlisting in the United States Army.  Prior to marriage, George completed one tour to Germany in the Korean War from January 1951 - January 1954, as a Paratrooper and Unit Clerk.
George and Eldena (Nordman) were married on November 24, 1954. After delivering propane for a few years, the Martin's opened the Mobil full service gas station in 1960. Due to the widening of 7th street from a two lane to a four lane, George felt that the station would be bought out. At that time, the Fina full service station was for sale. A deal was made and the new proprietor opened for business.  Closing the service station in 1985, George went on to work at Boeing until his retirement. George enjoyed working outside in his yard, eating cheeseburgers whenever he could and visiting with family and friends.
George is survived by his  three children: Michael Robert (Kristen) of Augusta, Eric Eldon of El Dorado, KS and Mary Ann (Terry) Dvorak of Augusta, five grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, May, 24, 2024 at the Augusta First Baptist Church, 1501 State St., Augusta. A visitation time will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at Elmwood Cemetery with military honors.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Kansas Honor Flight, P. O. Box 2371, Hutchinson, KS 67504 in care of Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta.
