Marty P. Marten

Marty P. Marten, 70, of Augusta, KS, formerly of Lafayette and Longmont, CO, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2018 in Augusta, KS.  Visitation 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 29, 2018 with service following 11:00 a.m. both at Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta, KS. Marty was born in Winfield, KS on December 29, 1947, to the late Clara (Harget) and Wilbur P. Marten. He served in the U.S. Army. Marty was a horseman, teacher, trainer, mentor, friend and author who made a huge impact on so many lives - humans and horses alike. He received the Colorado Horse Council "Horse Person of the Year Award" in 2007 in recognition of his contributions to the Colorado horse industry. The award stated: "A student of Tom and Bill Dorrance, Ray Hunt and Buck Brannaman, Marty has trained countless horses and riders, and through his hugely popular books and clinics has made the world of practical horsemanship available to many who would not otherwise have the chance to experience it.  His contributions of expertise, time, experience and patience have changed the lives of horses, horsemen and horsewomen throughout the West." He is survived by: nephews, Justin Skaer and wife Jolie of Douglass, KS, Marten Skaer and wife Julie of Skiatook, OK, Brady Skaer and wife Krissy of Augusta, KS; great nieces and nephews, Joe, Kora, Grace, Sam, J.J., Colten, Anna, Chisum, Libbi, and Heidi.  He was preceded in death by sister, Marilynn Sue Skaer.
